Jean Grundy Fanelli

Jean, a writer, musicologist and lecturer, has lived in Italy for many years, in Rome, the Chianti countryside and, for the last twenty, in the centre of Florence.

Much of her writing is academic, publishing numerous articles, including a recent account of late Seventeenth Century ceremonies with music of the Medici Court. There are also several books and contributions to books on baroque music in Tuscany, including a an in-depth study of the life and music of Giovanni Clari, a Tuscan Medici protégée, composer of oratorios and maestro di cappella active around the first half of the Eighteenth Century. Her most recent music book is Opera for Everyone.

Born in Lincoln, she has also published The War Comes to Witham Street, a semi-autobiographical novel about a child growing up in WWII and she occasionally contributes to newspapers, magazines and net sites with general articles on Florence and travel.

One of Jean’s pastimes is painting - she has exhibited her work – and cultivating her medieval city garden, a total disaster, since she nostalgically begins each spring by doggedly filling it with English border plants and rampant, tough stock like rhubarb and horseradish which, faced with the shock of their new environment, stubbornly refuse to thrive.
