How and why I did all this is a mystery to me now. Approaching terminal frazzlement I escaped with my partner, the illustrator and cartoonist Dan Pearce, to Andalucia in 1997, a move described in ‘Getting to Manana’, which I followed with ‘Cinnamon City’, also for Transworld (Daily Mail book of the month for December 2006), recounting a hare-brained adventure - buying a riad, supposedly as an investment, in Marrakech. Dan and I settled in Umbria in 2006. Already scary and seductive in equal measure, our life here may become yet another book to add to the mountain about moving to Italy. Since coming here I have set up a web magazine for a local estate agent which was interesting but exasperating, written travel and property features for the Financial times, the Irish Times and the Sunday Times, and craft and travel features for Selvedge Magazine. I am trying to transform my dire completed novel about growing up in Maine in 1800 and turn it into an irresistible must-read. What I am avoiding doing this minute is working on a screenplay about a strait-laced British woman who gets involved with Hijras in Varanasi.
